The Forgotten Battle remembered
In the fall of 2024, the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Scheldt will be commemorated. We will be present at a number of activities around this with a special event station.
Commemoration of 80 years of the Battle of the Scheldt
In 2019, we participated with various radio amateurs from different departments from Zeeland and beyond in the official commemoration of 75 years of the Battle of the Scheldt. This year, 2024, a large number of activities will be held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands. On the initiative of a number of radio amateurs from Region 44, we want to participate in the commemoration again this year.
We have contacted the organizers of the commemorations in the municipality of Vlissingen (Flushing) and the municipality of Borsele. The call PA80SODS has also been requested for the rest of the year 2024.
As far as is known, there will only be activities in Vlissingen during the weekend of November 2 and 3. The organization would be very happy if we would join in with our activities.
Municipality of Borsele
In Borsele, a whole program has been set up with a large number of activities throughout the year in which all Borsele villages participate. A number of the organizing teams would like us to join in on these activities. At the moment we are thinking about setting up transmitter stations with the transceivers from the war years and the present time. We also have made banners on which we show what the role of this way of communicating was in that time and is in this time.
In the municipality of Borsele, a walking route will be created in all villages along special points. These tours will take place from September 2024 to June 2025. Each village will make its own choice of activities that tie in with the route and a broadcasting station is one of the activities that they will be offered to choose from. So it is not yet clear in which villages we can present ourselves.
Our friends from the Surplus Radio Society (SRS) will also be active in the region with the special call. In the weekend of October 19 and 20, PA80SODS was activated in IJzendijke (Zeeuws-Vlaanderen) during the Liberation celebrations. The photos of this can already be admired in the Photo Gallery.
