Activating PA60CUBA

During the Cold War Weekend we activated de special event station PA60CUBA from a former Civil Defence bunker in Middelburg.

Cuba-crisis: a critical period in time

In 2022 it was 60 years ago that the Cuban crisis took place. It was a critical period during the Cold War. With the opening of the underground bunker of the Civil Defense we looked back at this time. From the bunker the special event station PA60CUBA was launched.

There is no hard date for “when the Cold War started” and “when the Cold War was over”, but it is generally accepted that soon after the end of WWII, tensions between East and West increased and the Cold War began in 1947. The ideological opposites of the United States and the Soviet Union were left as the only two superpowers, and the enmity between the two countries would determine international politics in the coming period.

It became the time of “armed peace”. The ‘Cold War’ refers to a struggle in which the weapons remain cold and attempts are made to intimidate the opponent, mainly verbally – via radio, TV, propaganda – and militarily – through an arms race. In fact, there was never a direct military confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union themselves.

During the Cold War weekend, you did not encounter large tanks, guns and aircrafts. We have shown the things that lie beneath the surface. What appeal was made to the citizens, what did the average citizen know about “the atomic bomb”, what would have happened if “the bomb” had really fallen, what happened if you were in the bunker and your family above ground, would two weeks underground have been enough and then what?
